In 1890-1 Seitei published a woodblock-printed picture book entitled Seitei Kachō Gafu (Picture Album of Flowers and Birds by Seitei). It included fifty-six pictures of flowers and (or) birds in three volumes. The twenty-one pictures in volume one are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Seitei varied color intensity, with background objects colored less intensely than foreground objects, to create the illusion of a three-dimensional scene. This feature of Seitei’s style was innovative at the time. Previously, all objects in a Japanese print had typically been colored with the same intensity, making the picture look two-dimensional.
